Hickery pointed out this story about Rugby Volunteer Fire and Rescue on face book.
Sounds like a fine team we will be donating the raffle proceeds to.
"Yesterday Rugby was dispatched at 1107 hours to a motorcycle vs bear with 1 injury. Patient was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for further treatment. The bear condition is unknown and was not on scene when Rugby arrived."
In the comits below...
"Karin Richardson
My husband Donny Richardson and I are visiting from Florida and work as a Captain Paramedic and Flight Nurse. We came up on this wreck moments after it happened and cared for the patient until Rugby arrived. We continued to work with your amazing team of volunteers throughout the patients care when he was turned over to the flight crew. We are beyond impressed with Rugby Fire Rescues volunteers - their professionalism, their skills, and compassion for what they do. Thank you so much to everyone who responded yesterday - that area is truly blessed by you!"

Been a lot of bear problems here in linnville and the surrounding over the years I think more people are camping more than ever that tends to draw the bears in out of the woods that's just my thought! Hope the guy is going to be ok!

Its a good day to be out in the woods no matter the weather.Mist One..
It's been such a dry summer that I suspect the food supply has been low for bears and others.

Amen.
All the way from Florida and they were in the right place at the right time.

We had a major bear problem at the John Rock Hang.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
Hickery and myself talked about doing a much needed work project in the group site.
The large, circle, rock wall fire pit has built up over time to where it is near the top.
We got permission from Marci, head ranger to do it. probably on Fri, late morning.
We will have shovels, pick/ mattock and at least one wheel barrel.
Marci said she "we can probably throw the camp host into the mix with the gator for easier transporting of the ashes to the dump site."
I figure it won't be that big of a chore with several people taking turns.
Maybe a couple hours, taking our time.
It will be done before most of our group get there.

Debbie and I and the grandkids and their parents want to hike up to Mt Rogers. Alltrails says 10 mi. Is that one way or round trip? I know that a lot of ya'll have done it. Help us! I don't want to bite off more than the kids can chew.. Grandkids ages 5 and 10.
It's been a while since my feet, knees and hips let me enjoy much hiking but I've been to Mount Rogers/ Thomas Knob Shelter plenty of times.
I got out my maps and looked on line.
The link below says it's just over 4 miles from Massy Gap to Mount Rogers, which sounds right to me.
And I think the elevation gain is about 1000'.
I'm pretty sure it will be closer starting at Massy Gap rather than the campground.
You can park in the overnight backpacking area but I think that's just a little longer and I believe I read that you have to get a tag or something to use it now.
As long as all the parking spaces are not full along the main road going by Massy Gap, you can park there and go right up Rhododendron Gap Trail.
It's a steep start so pace your self's.
It's a short but steep way up to the AT (take a left) which will take you out of GHSP and on to Rhododendron Gap where the AT crosses with a horse trail and Pine Mountain Trail.
There is a big rock formation there you can go up and get some great views.
We repelled off it one day!
Stay on the AT (leftward) and it's not far to Thomas Knob Shelter.
It's not far past the shelter to the Mount Rogers Spur Trail.
Check out the map because there are two other trails that also go to Rhododendron Gap, a horse trail and The Wilburn Ridge Trail that goes up and over the highest peaks of Wilburn Ridge.
I would stick with the AT for sure.
Just so you know, there is no view from the top of Mt Rodgers but it's a cool hike up with all the ferns and moss. Plus, you can say you've been to the highest point in VA.
