    8' ceiling hang height

    To all hammock gurus:

Any ideas for bringing the hang height lower than 7.5' (8' balcony ceiling minus a 3" eye screw). My only option is the ceiling and when I try longer eye screws/bolts, the bolt will bend under the 200 lb tension. The distance needed for the below details is 30' and my balcony is 21'. If unable to bring my ceiling down, is a 42° hang angle OK?

    • 9' bridge Hammock (Haven)
    • 9' ridgeline
    • 20" sit height
    • 7' 9" hang height
    • 200 lb weight
    • 30° hang angle

    Thank you in advance,

    Schole

I'm doing something with similar or same specs in my basement. I believe I'm at 21', about 8' up. I'm just hanging from a hole drilled into the 2x10 joists. Can you do something like that instead of the bolt? I bent a really thick bolt elsewhere in a bedroom; it's fine but still a little worrisome.

A padeye would probably be more secure. Or a D-ring like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-23...124T/312994480

Give us a picture of your ceiling. Are the joists exposed? If so you could attach 2x4's coming down from the joists at the distance and height that you want. You may have to brace them so they are not pulling towards each other too much. Then you could put an eyebolt in each 2x4.

    For consideration:

When I lived in Bozeman and had a garage I would suspend a pole (sections of camo netting military poles) from the garage trusses. You might be able to do something similar by attaching a pole, or board to the ceiling joists and attach the hammock suspension to the ends of the pole/board. In this system the stresses typically exerted by a hammocks suspension are taken up by the pole and not the bolts in the ceiling. The bolts or eye bolts that hold the pole carry half the weight of the hammock, gear, and occupant if it is attached at the ends, i.e. it is also possible to attach at more than just the two end points.

If I'm following and you already have eye loops installed, the easiest solution would be to drop a suspension bar at 30* (chain link fence rail), and then suspend your hammock off of that. Your hammock connection points would lie beyond the ceiling connection points on the bar, like two layers of trapezoids.

That bar can be suspended vertically (like a TDS). no need for 30 degrees. That only applies to the hammock suspension.
