    Non-gathered-end hammocks?

My first hammock was a Chillax (double) that I spotted at Costco. I took it backpacking, suspecting that it would solve my cold feet issues. It did (with an underquilt), however I felt it could be lighter.

I then got a Eno sub6, which is significantly lighter, but the rumors are that it's delicate, and, while I haven't had any trouble, it does look possible.

However, they both got me thinking about how one might build a lighter hammock without being more delicate. It seems that there's a lot of material at the gathered ends that isn't doing anything. If one could make something more like a woven hammock, with thin, light thread, that theoretically should meet both criteria.

Has anyone seen such a thing, or woven your own? I'm curious if the thread one might use would be so thick as to make the hammock just as heavy, or if a tug on a thread would tangle it.

    cheers

30 ish years ago I used to use a nylon net hammock in the garden. It was super small and light. I’ve wondered he same thing as you but the conclusion I came to (with no real research or calculating) was that modern lightweight materials pack as small, as light and are more comfortable than a net to lie in…

Isn't all that extra material at the ends of a gathered end hammock needed for strength?

I've made lots of hammocks with clews over the years and never had a material failure. The initial guess about how to reinforce the edge where the clews attach worked, so I haven't changed it. The hollow braid fishing line (120 lb or 200 lb) was chosen because it was light and strong, but I quickly learned that an even bigger advantage was that it's so easy to adjust, because each clew is a whoopie sling.
