I’m 6’ and use the regular BB. 99% of my trips are backpacking so the shorter hammock is lighter and just as comfortable as my 11’ hammock.

I don’t tie it out. Just hang something light (normally poop kit bag) with a carabiner from the zipper pull and that keeps the burnet tight and off my face. Don’t toe shelf out either.

Underquilts are essential, usually more expensive, and heavier than hammocks. So I chose the Wooki UQ first as in the sweet spot of weight:warmth through its “only where you need it” design. Then choosing an XLC as the best matching hammock was easy. It’s comfortable, sturdy, and the shelf is just genius.

The shelf is amazingly handy. The tie outs keep the bugnet high up and out (ie away from from my face) The footbox really helps me find my lay fast.

For me, the Blackbirds are the most comfortable netted hammocks on the market. I use the original Blackbird for hiking and the XLC / Eldorado for everynight hanging. I assume they are more comfortable because they have a longer ridgeline than any other GE hammock on the market that I have tried, and due to the cut of the net. The longer ridgeline gives me a flatter lay. The net (and top cover, too) has the footbox and the extra panel on the head side. Both allow me to lie much closer to the edge without getting pinched. I also appreciate that the net tie-out is above the net panel and not the hammock itself. This gives a lot more head space, and also means that I can dive under the tie-out cord when entering or exiting. With other hammocks you have to step over the cords, and I inevitably trip at some point. The icing on the cake is the shelf, which is simply convenient when storing larger stuff.

A Xlc was my first hammock and the one that made me fall in love with hammock camping! I like the shelf way better than a ridgeline hanger, especially in winter when I want to keep hats, gloves, or other bulky items nearby.

I’ve got a Dream hammock Freebird in airwave material on order and an Autumn Ultralight in MTN 1.7 on the way as well. More just because I want to try other materials and designs more than because there is anything wrong with the XLC.
