    MacCat Deluxe

    Question for you folks ...

Was going through my gear the other day and pulled out my MacCat Deluxe that I purchased years ago and without ANY grief, I might add. It is such a great tarp and it was kinda sad to see things come to an end with that supplier.

I don't know anywhere near enough about tarp fabrics, but can anyone shed any light as to what fabric those tarps were made of? Is there anyone else out there these days using the same or similar? My ONLY regret with that tarp is that it is a little on the small side, but what a sweet, sweet piece of gear.

Is it just me or does that fabric feel/seem more durable?

    Cheers.

Hard to say what the fabric is as OES use to use Spin fabric at one time along with silnylon. The two I have are made of silnylon. My understanding is that OES stopped using Spin as there was a problem with the quality of the fabric available and Cuben, ( now called Dyneema ) took over as being the go to light weight fabric for tarps. No sure if Spin fabric is spelled Spin or Spinn.

Did a little more poking around -- could be the weight of the fabric that is different. It looks to be a 1.4 oz silnylon, but still a very well made piece of gear.

I may be in the market for something to replace my WB Superfly. Any suggestions as to what is out there that is well made and durable, quality construction?

    Cheers.

OES's service sucked big time but they were the gold standard for tarps for many years.

Can't go wrong with a Superfly. Lots of very good tarp manufactures out there depending on style, size, fabric ect you want.

While I love my superfly, it is heavy. I replaced mine with the equivalent from Hammock Gear in dyneema.

I am primarily a canoeist, so weight is less of an issue for me. But I do like the idea of a tarp with doors that can be buttoned down when gales of November come early or opened right up when the stars are out. Ended up pulling the trigger on an SLD Winter Haven in a 13' length to go with my new Blackbird XLC.

I must have caught OES on a good day -- service and delivery was quick and prompt. With luck like that, I shoulda played the lotto when I had the chance. That remains my go-to tarp when I am backpacking -- great piece of kit.
