Hope to return to the trail...

Greetings, it has been almost four years since I last logged in to this site, glad to be back. I have not been on a serious trail hike since 2016 when I helped our scout troop with a trek at Philmont (No hammocks allowed ) but before that I had been getting at least one trek in per year with my son. We did Philmont in 2010, shakedown hikes for the few years before that and Superior Trail hikes every year from 2011 to 2015. Since he went to college I have not been on trail but I am hoping to return. I made my own hammock with the help of this forum and its members (Thank You!) and enjoyed using it on treks in 2012 - 15. It has come with me to the Quetico canoe wilderness in Canada since then, but only for relaxation, not a full time sleep system. My set-up includes a ripstop hammock with Amsteel whoopie slings connected directly to the hammock. I use tree straps and the marlin spike hitch method as well. I also made a Fronkey inspired bug net and cat-cut tarp. The tarp was never really utilized with the hammock as I was borrowing our troops tarp for most of my SHT hikes. I am looking to get caught up on any major changes in the hammock world that may have come along in the last five or so years and if you could suggest some search terms to help me find info, that would be great. For starters, I am thinking I need help with suspending my tarp system as well as finding a good source for an underquilt. I have set a goal to thru-hike the Superior trail next summer and I think I would prefer the hammock over a tent. Thanks!

Watch some YouTube videos about hammocks, suspensions, insulation, tarps and tarp suspensions.

Shug’s videos are most informative and entertaining. He has a ten or more part series about hammocks, suspensions, insulation, tarps, tarp suspensions with both knots and hardware.

Go to a local group hang to see what different options the cool kids are using.

While there have been many new options offered by our cottage vendors, you are probably almost already caught up with the herd. But you will see a few new ideas that you might want to use in your hammock rigging.

Maybe with time, backpack with other backpackers. Their total pack weight is amazingly light

I asked a similar question a short while ago. Apparently the answer is not much has changed…
