    Help rethreading nama claw

    Hi all,

I began using Jeff Myers' CRL a little while ago and was making a few changes today. While making those changes, I had the bright idea to take off the nama claw that came on the CRL. I went to put it back on, but can't seem to figure out how to do so. The end of my CRL is thicker than the rest of the line (bury?) and doesn't seem to fit through the opening of the nama claw.

The resistance that it gave me when I tried taking it off initially should have given me pause, but here we are.

Any ideas on threading this through?

You could try squishing it with some needlenose pliers and jamming it through, or just cut off the bury, rethread it, then re-bury or tie a knot on the end (a plain overhand or figure-8 would do) to keep it from falling off.

I have no idea what size line you have with it but owning nama claws and using them I know that opening is super small even for 1.75mm line. Best advice without knowing more is to try and gently cut the end of the line you have to get a clean slate and try to thread it through. Maybe cut at an angle?

you have us guessing. what is at the end of the ridgeline which you are trying to put through? it sounds like it might be a spliced loop. in that case undo the splice, put the line through your hardware of choice, and redo the splice. no need to cut anything.

I would say that it's a spliced "handle", were the line is pulled back into itself to make a thicker part of the line so that the hardware doesn't fall off and there is something at the end of the line that's thicker than the rest.

Spliced handle, is that called a back splice?
You might be able to remove back splice, by carefully backing it out.
But if it’s only buried an inch, might be easier to cut back splice off. Then install Nama Claw. Then do a new back splice or tie a stopper knot on end, to prevent Nama Claw from accidentally sliding off end of line.

If it is a loop at the end of .175 line you can get it through by pulling it with some fishing line and working the claw open and shut. PITA but possible. If it is a backsplice you'll need to cut it off and re-splice, losing a bit of length, as it is impossible to "push" it through and there is not enough room for both the line and bury passing simultaneously if you tried to pull it through.

Yep, I guess that's what it would be called.

Here is what I do: take a piece of Mara 70 thread, thread it through a needle, go through the Nama Claw from the other end, put the needle through the end of the backsplice (just enough so that it will not rip), go back through the Nama Claw, grab both thread ends and pull while squishing the line through from the other side.
