I had a great time at my first hang despite the lack of sleep on Friday night and it was nice to meet some of the folks on here in person. I never even took my camera out of the bag, so thanks for the great photos and videos.

In summary, I went in a day early to solo camp at a different, more remote site about 300 yards down the trail. Just after I had set up my hammock and tarp, the bear approached me and and got as close as maybe 20 feet. I yelled and he walked off, but kept coming back. It was getting dark and I was by myself, so I decided to just leave my stuff (food was still in my pack, which I took with me) and go home. I came back in the morning with the intention of moving my hammock, but the bear had ransacked my camp. My quilts and pillows were trashed, but hammock and tarp survived.

Here is a quick video I got of the bear before I decided to hike out Wednesday night.

    Kevin,
The critter followed me to Asheville. Been wandering the condo grounds in the evenings. Will try to point it toward Mills River.

Broke down and bought a bear vault. Got the small one BV450. Figured as it is rated for 4 days of food that should be plenty for my needs. Now I have to see if I am smart enough to figure out how to open it.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

That’s what I bought as well but I also have a Bearikade Weekender on order. I have watched several videos on people packing these things and you can get a lot in them if you pack judiciously.

Great video, thank you for sharing! It was great to get just a sip of the flavor of the thing. I hope to make it early next year and chase off all the bears so everyone can have a restful weekend.
