    First Topquilt

I'm quite indebted to this Forum for the CatSplat Differential Cut Underquilt Calculator that I used and all the support by way of others posting their experience. I set out to make a winter top quilt and loved the Differential cut approach so much that I used it in my Top Quilt design. Used ION 1.1oz ripstop from Dutchware and 16 oz of 900 Fill DWR down from Loose Goose down supply. The sewn footbox didn't quite come together like I had hoped but it works quite well. Took my son on a loop around the Grayson Highlands in April and slept like a baby in 40 degree temps while it rained for 11 hours straight! It's too warm to use it now but looking forward to cooler temperatures to pull it back out and see how low a temp it will support. Final weight was 28.75oz. So thank you everyone. Hope to start on a matching underquilt this weekend.

Chadx and JB, thanks! I think I heard Dan Becker once talk about how he likes a bright color for the inner fabric because it's easier to find things you drop in the dark. I also read that bears are curious and will investigate things they haven't seen before. So no bright colors on the outside for me!

Very Impressive. I admire the work of DIYers because I don't think I could ever do that.

    xMagnolia,
I am sure you could do it! I borrowed my wife's thread injector and started with some smaller projects like dry bags for my backpacking chair, then made the hammock which is really just a rectangle. I started having ideas that I wanted to try and my son has a very nice hammock that I'm still a little jealous of. As my confidence grew and my desire to expand into cooler temperatures I started reading up on this forum on quilts. I'm not afraid of failing as I know I'll learn from it (and I can always reuse the down). I'm sure the next ones will have more consistent baffle thickness and look more lofty. All part of the learning process. And it's fun to pull out something with the features of a much more expensive cottage brand (if not the quality).

That will be warm! 16oz of 900 should be ~15* comfort rating if your baffle height and construction was adequate. Nice work
