JB's Ugly Quilt #1 - DIY Lightweight Summer Topquilt

With the John Rock hang coming up next week I wanted to have a topquilt that was suitable for our sultry Carolina summers and lighter than the trusty old 20-degree Kelty sleeping bag I've used for years. I've done a couple small MYOG projects, but this is my first "real" piece of gear I've ever made. I'm no wiz with a sewing machine either, but I watched some Youtube videos and read a lot on the forums, and finally got up the gumption to order some stuff from RSBTR. What resulted is what you see here. The ugliest **** topquilt anyone has ever made or used, but I love it just the same!

I used 1.1oz calendared ripstop for the shell, and 2.5oz Climashield insulation. Total outlay for materials was $70 and I have some material left over for other projects. All told it took about 3 hours to make. The biggest challenge was figuring out dimensions, but I measured my Kelty bag and sized this quilt down a bit to 70" x 50" with a taper to 40" at the footbox. I'm a bigger fella (5' 11", 230lbs), and I tend to be a sprawly, tossy-turny sleeper and like a loose blanket, but even with sizing down this is plenty big enough to cover me up to my nose and wrap around underneath me on both sides when laying either on my back or my side. I figure this will get me down to about 50 degrees on its own, and maybe even lower in combination with my 20 degree Wooki (I'm a hot sleeper). You'll notice there are no frills, no zippers, no shock cord channels, nothing fancy to weigh it down or break. Maybe at some point I'll add a channel for some shock cord to cinch the footbox, but maybe I won't. I took a nap on the couch with it and it was perfect!

First time poster.....I got the courage last year to do the same. If it does the job, then it's pretty enough.

    Looks good enough!

I kinda like ugly stuff that works. Has a charm all its own.

Thanks, y'all I've now taken two naps in it with great success. Time to make jerky and fruit leather!

Your DIY top quilt looks prettier than my DIY underquilt, also made with the kit from RSBTR. Congrats on the project.

    That's no top quilt...................it's a monster!!!!!

I think it looks great. DIY stuff is supposed to be a little quirky, otherwise it looks too professional. You should see my DIY tarp. It's messy, but bombproof.
