I'm new to hammock camping. I just took delivery on an Amok UL. I ordered it without the pad thinking that I could use my Nemo Tensor, and I was wrong. After I dusted myself off, I bit the bullet and ordered the pad that I should have ordered to begin with.
Welcome aboard! I've been replacing some gear with nicer stuff and reminded myself Buy One Cry Once (or be content with what you have, probably the wiser apoproach). My ambitions within a hobby often expand so the BOCO method works better for me, and maybe you too

Yes, you need a pad with baffles that rune head to toe. I use my Exped 9 Downmat in Winter.
