I recently made the switch to a double layer RidgeRunner and love it. I've been using a Nemo Tensor Insulated inflatable pad as bottom insulation. Haven't had an opportunity yet to see how low I can comfortably take that. But I definitely like the way that the pad improves the lay of the hammock.
Once we get back into winter conditions I am quite sure the pad alone won't suffice. Maybe that'll even happen in fall, or at high enough elevation in the summer. I could get a beefier pad for when that happens, but I'm thinking of just adding an underquilt in addition to the Tensor to get the best of both worlds.
Does anybody have any info on trying to figure out temperature rating when combining a pad with an underquilt? Like if it was going to be 20 degrees out, I obviously wouldn't need a 20 degree underquilt if I am also using the pad, but would a 30 degree UQ suffice? Maybe 40 degree?
Given the long lead times on UQs right now I'd like to order what I will need for the winter soon, but I'm not sure how to pick the right temp rating given this scenario.
For what it's worth I find HG's temp ratings to be pretty darn close to what I personally find comfortable. I've get a 20 degree quilt set from them, have used them both in 20 degree whether and been fine but don't think I could go much colder with them.
