UGQ seems to have a 'happy medium' option that I like in my 30* Bandit - the flat sewn option. Eliminates any air leakage / cold intrusion through a hole, but isn't as bulky as the full insulated footbox.

I do believe enlightened equipment adds a draft plug if you add the draft collar to the quilt for the zippered foot box ones as well.

Haha what are the specs of that burrow? I am looking to upgrade to the 40* burrow in the 950 line! Hammock Gear now makes a little ball of down that is perfectly sized to fit that gap for people who don't want to be constrained with a sewn footbox. For $10 and 0.33 ounces you can have a draft plug!

When I got into the UL philosophy a little over 10 years ago, as a ground dweller, I got a 50deg rated quilt with a zipper/cinch footbox thinking it'd be really handy for venting. Truth is, I've used that quilt a bunch over the years and only a couple of times have ever bothered to unzip it to vent; it's just so easy to stick a leg outside or to toss the lower quilt aside, and it has worked out the same for use in the hammock. I've purchased several more quilts of various ratings since then and never got another one with a zip/conch footbox and I have never missed that feature.

BTW, almost every quilt I have is 10D all around and I've never had any issues at all with them. The only exceptions are a couple of 7D/7D and so far they're doing well, although I've only used them for 2 seasons or so and it's perhaps a bit too early to give an unqualified recommendation. They do smoosh down amazingly small.

Do you lose an inch or 2 making the 'knot'? Part of my goal is to maximize the length of the quilt as I fit in a Regular, but dont have extra length to spare.

I'll try that next time and see how it goes.
I fully agree. Why did I not think of that. Brilliant. I would only buy a zippered foot-box for any top-quilt, except those designed for very cold conditions because I value the ability to sleep on the ground with the quilt spread out, but now if I get a Scandinavian rated quilt ( the stuff of dreams ) ... I may go with a zipper as well.
