Last word I had was no John Rock hang this summer. The Cats Gap route was reported closed due to bridges out, trail washed out in places and blockages. This info is a few months old. Yet to see a first hand report on the forum about the trail, etc. but don't anticipate any good news.

I asked Dennis about this a few weeks ago & he said no JR this year due to bridges being out & trail damage. But he did say he was sponsoring another hang at the beginning of Oct instead & it's somewhere else. Just keep an eye on the Trips forum for official announcement.

Thanks for the intel. Was really looking forward to it but other hangs will be enjoyed as well.

Hey Jeff, Foxpoop checked out the campsite and in our opinion only two small sites were suited for hammocks, but only 8 allowed per site, the rest would have to use hammock stands, definitely not suitable for a group event. I wont post nothing about Oct camping since I will be using my truck tent not a hammock. Keep you all informed.

Yes with new business at work and the amount of damage from last years storms. I wont be hosting John Rock, maybe we can get some good DD (due diligence) on the areas progress and plan for next year.

What about a temporary relocation using the Black Balsam Forest on either side of Black Balsam Road off the BRP? There’s plenty of hammock trees along the MST section and parking along Black Balsam Road or the lot at the end assuming you don’t arrive at prime Friday or Saturday am day hiking times. Also good loop hikes from there around Sam Knob or the ALT if looking to get in some exercise.

others might like this, but I'm done for the summer. Just had rotator cuff surgery last week - 6-8 weeks in a sling & several months of physical therapy. Not fun typing this with 1 finger of my non-dominant hand either!

Bummer Jeff. But you should be ready for cool weather camping season.
