Greetings from Minnesota. Tent backpacker/camper trying to convert to hammock

Just wanted to stop by and say hi. I live in Rochester MN I’ve recently decided to take the plunge into hammocking rather than a tent. This forum was super helpful in finding information in making the switch. I’ve been backpacking/camping/fishing since I was little. Nothing super hard core I just love the outdoors and enjoy sharing that with my wife and kids.

As of recent I have had a lot of trouble with sleeping on the ground on a pad. I even invested in a Seatosummit Ether light XT in a Rec Large to try to help because I sleep on my side. I am not a light dude at 5”11 and 220lbs and constantly had shoulder and hip pain in the morning from bottoming out. So that’s my story on what brought me here

I’ve always kept a small cheap compressible hammock with my when I go camping/backpacking but quickly realized this would not suffice as a sleeping hammock based on its length.
After a lot of reading I ended up with the following
    - Blackbird XLC single layer in the purple dream-Tex nylon
    - superfly tarp 11’ in the silpoly
    -enlightened equipment 50deg TQ
    - apex UQ kit (nylon shell and interior with insulation to get it to 20degrees. I do a decent amount of early spring trout fishing and it’s snowed a few times and gotten below freezing) from ripstopbytheroll to sew together myself. I would have preferred a down quilt for packing small but I didn’t want to invest the money just yet and I was struggling to find anything that was going to ship anytime soon 😂

anyways really looking forward to setting this all up and trying it out.

    happy adventures!

I asked them to use their transporters to send it to me to have immediately. They said they couldn’t accommodate that request.

Ahh, I thought when you said you "ended up with the following" is that you actually got it.

You didn't mention what you got for the hammock suspension.

Yeah my statement was misleading. I should have said most items were in the mail and arriving this week
I have the big tree webbing straps for my current cheap hammock. Decided to try the woopie straps for the new one with the fish hooks.

Nice, at least you jumped in with decent gear. I did the cheapo/starter route which ended up costing me more when I swapped out all that with better/lighter stuff.

If you haven't yet, go watch Shug's videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/shugemery/playlists

Yeah I made that mistake early on in life with my backpacking/camping gear. Knew not to do that a second time around. Ends up costing more in the long run. And thank you for the link I’ve actually been watching quite a few of his videos. Super handy too since he’s from Minnesota and i imagine his choices are targeted towards the weather here. Also mosquitos
