thanks for the great trip report
I've hiked most of those trails over a couple different trips, your report makes me want to revisit that stretch of the AT, probably should do it while I can hang at the shelters

Thanks! I just looked at the photos from your Gregory Bald trip that you linked to in another thread. Wow! I will definitely be heading back up this winter when the skies won't be so hazy. The campsite at Sheep Pen gap is such a nice campsite and so close to Gregory Bald that it makes it hard not to catch the sunset and/or sunrise.
I really want to hit the AT north of Newfound Gap while we can still hang at the shelters. I haven't been on that stretch between there and Mt Cammerer in thirty years and that is far too long. Plus I still have a couple of 6K peaks in that section that I want to bag for South Beyond 6K.
Great trail report, we finished the GSMNP last fall! That place is heaven on earth!!
I did that section of the AT last spring when I realized that you could hang at the shelters. https://backpackandbeer.blogspot.com...taloochee.html
I did not like Peck's Corner or Tricorner Knob and I remember not liking the looks of Cosby Knob on a past trip. All three of those shelters and the surrounding area feel very closed in or cramped. The shelters south of Newfound Gap are a lot nicer. With that said, I like that section of the AT so it is probably worth your time to revisit
Awesome! I love the Mountain Laurels!
