Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.
Tragic. Prayers to his family.
Good luck,

Yes, always very sad and a nightmare.
Those birch trees, poplars and aspens are weak. I for one never hang off of them anymore.
In the BWCA they ask hammockers to not hang off the birches.

Tragic. Here's the full writeup from NHF&G:

I searched but couldn't find any mention of the trees he was using--psyculman, do you have more info on this? We did have a big storm system with gusts up to 50/60 mph blow through on Wednesday, the day before this occurred. Another possibility is a storm-damaged tree.
Regardless, rest in peace Mr. Murphy.
Well that is sobering...
I saw this on the news last night. Sobering indeed ! Living in NH, this hits close to home. In a different news article I read on this incident, Fish and Game made an educated guess that he had set up in the dark after covering 12 miles that day. He likely didn't realize how dead the tree was that he hung his hammock from. Perhaps we could all be a little more vigilant when setting up.

Sad to hear this- prayers go out to his family.
I've read nothing that says he hung from a birch tree, but nothing scares me more than birch trees. I was once in a birch forest (not hanging from birch trees) and it was really cold that night. The birch trees started exploding - maybe too much moisture and a hard freeze? I don't know what happened - but I swore I would never go near a birch tree after that!
Around here in NJ, birch forests tend to sprout up and then spontaneously disintegrate about 20-30 years later. No way I'll ever hang from a birch - not gonna happen.
