NH Hiker killed by tree

By all accounts this was a tragic accident, but it highlights the importance of tree selection. Not at all saying that this unfortunate individual bears any of the responsibility for his demise; but the woods don't care. This is something that can happen to any one of us on the trails. I know Shug has an excellent video on tree selection and it's been discussed here ad nauseam - sometimes it's a good idea to remind ourselves.

May his memory be a blessing, and may the bereaved be comforted.

Man that sucks. I know I got worried last October on my South Mountains SP trip after what was left of Hurricane Delta rolled through NC. Was rainy and a little breezy but not that bad. The first night, I heard a tree crashing down. Got up and checked the other campers...all good. I know that every sound in the woods is magnified at least 10 times...but it sounded like a big tree and real close. Next morning, I looked around the immediate area but couldn't find it.

Same thing happened the second night, but it sounded a bit further away. Crazy, because the weather was clear without much of a breeze. It just fell. Went looking around the site and couldn't find it either.
