Just registered my thru on the AT for next Spring

Planning to do a flip-flop - SOBO from Harriman at Elk Pen and then NOBO from Harriman to Maine. Going to start on my brother's birthday on March 26th and hike in his honor - I know it's a very early start but I'm planning to send my winter gear home as the weather warms up and have my spring gear shipped forward to me.

I've got plenty of time to do shakedown hikes and dial in my gear, and I'm hoping to post trail updates as well as my shakedowns along the way - any advice from previous hammocking thru-hikers would be hugely appreciated. I'll post my gear lists here as I go along.

This is something I've been meaning to do for about twenty years; my brother died thirty years ago this March.

I’m so jealous! I can’t wait for updates! I’d love to set out on a hike that long, just haven’t saved the money or worked out the glitches yet. For example, I have to visit my pain management doctor every 28 days - makes it hard to take off for 5 or 6 months! My pain doctor is all for the exercise, but we just haven’t had THAT conversation yet!

Super excited to live vicariously, though!

OK - my gear list so far:

    ULA Ohm 2.0
    TrailHeadz Banshee (1.2 MTN)
    TrailHeadz 0 degree UQ
TrailHeadz 0 (40) degree TQ - will swap the 0 for the 40 when the weather changes
    Warbonnet Superfly
    Thermarest NeoAir Xlite
    JetBoil MiniMo
    Toaks Ti Long Spoon
    Ursack AllMitey 10L
    Ursack 10L aluminum liner
    Patagonia Down Sweater
Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Trekking Poles
Magellan Quick dry convertible hiking pants (worn)
    REI Sahara wicking T-shirt
    Patagonia Capiline lightweight baselayer pants
    Patagonia Capiline lightweight baselayer shirt
ExOfficio BugsAway Halo Check Longsleeve Shirt (worn)
Smartwool PhD medium compression hiking socks (2p)
    UnderArmor TechMesh underwear (2pr)
    Columbia full zip fleece jacket
    Obermeyer No. 4 shell jacket
    Blaze orange merino wool beanie

Some of these have yet to arrive so I haven't gotten a total base weight yet. I'm planning on sleeping in the base layers and only wearing them to hike in if the weather is extremely cold; otherwise I'll be layering with the fleece and the shell.

Good luck and I wish you well. Are you going to VLog your hike by any chance?

Enjoy your trip! I went on a hike once it was pretty fun.

From your gear list it seems you may be a little cold natured but if thats what you need to start with bring it. You will likely send some of those items home in the dog days of summer in the mid-atlantic. I used a 50F top quilt from VA to the whites and it suited me well but I am a warm sleeper. I didnt carry a pad and wouldnt if I did the AT again. The shelters are pretty rat infested and usually contain snorers. When I would go to town getting a room at a "nice" hotel over a hostel to get a bed was ok with me but your budget may vary.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks for posting the list! Why are you packing such a warm UQ and TQ to begin the trip in summer? Just because thats what you have on hand? Also why a sleeping pad?

Not at all trying to be critical to be clear! Always just curious to hear peoples thoughts for one piece of gear vs another.

I'm beginning my trip in March of 2022 - there will possibly still be snow and certainly cold temperatures in NY, NJ and PA in the mountains where I'm starting. The pad is in the eventuality that I have to stay the night in a shelter or on a hostel floor - I'm hoping that doesn't happen but it's a possibility that it might be wise to be prepared for.

I've used a 0 degree UQ year round - I hang it looser in warmer weather and simply adjust my top insulation; I've found it simpler than either buying or carrying different underquilts based on the season and the weight difference isn't enough to spend an extra 300-400 dollars on UQs IMO; other people have different opinions and I may decide differently before I actually start on the Trail.

Thank you for asking and helping me think and talk through my options!
