Just wanted to give a shout-out to the mod team

A big thanks to the mods for their tireless work on keeping this forum a safe and friendly place for all of us. It can't be easy reading through all of these posts and gently reminding folks of the rules, and weeding out the stuff that dances on the line or over it.

Thanks, guys and gals. You do a fantastic job, and we appreciate you.

You don't always get enough appreciation.

    Kudos.

    I must completely disagree.

This forum is just a shadow of its former self with daily posts falling to almost zero.

In my humble opinion, it is because the moderators shut down and erase the most interesting discussions with no dissention allowed.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to the mod team

Our moderators are tasked with enforcing TOS terms of service.
And there are probably unspoken-unwritten rules in TOS, (Phantom guessing here since I’ve not memorized TOS), not sure if this is a rule or not—
Mocking, or sarcastic posts especially, against our newer members, excessive contentious personal disagreements with other forum members about the best way to hang hammock, tarp etc.
Condescending, patronizing tone addressing others ideas—even though their ideas don’t work very well.

Possibly there can be changes in TOS.

One way would be to have a certain section that could contain all kinds of dumb speak, mean speak or posting wrong information that experienced hammock campers would agree is wrong.

So anyone could start posting in the “no rules or few rules section—or our moderators could move any posts to that section.

But many of my ideas, are ideas that may not work for a variety of reasons: too much work, or disagreement over what posts would be banished to a different section of Hammock Forums.

One of my old supervisors, used to ask me how things were going when he visited my work.
I’d say things were not going very well.

Al would look me straight in the eye and say
    “Things could be worse”

    Al was right
Any changes to TOS would have to be carefully considered.
    Because
    “Things could be worse”

I’m not sure, what the rules are, but, if you think a moderator, has treated you unfairly, maybe best to send a private message with your concerns, to that moderator or someone else for relief.

No one is perfect. I think most everyone is doing asbestos they can!

    Good luck!

GroundHog, that might be what happened. I didn’t consider that possibility.
    Good detective work!

I used to be a mod at a popular Photoshop and web design forum, every community has it's unwritten rules and some mods are more sensitive to certain things so there's discussions about it. Donating members have their gated sections, mods have theirs too. Things generally work out pretty smoothly and the rules get applied pretty fairly. Ours here seem cool; when they post they're actually helpful instead of just enforcing rules.

A bad example is being a donating member on a Mac forum with a squeaky clean 10k posts over 8 or 10yrs, having a benign comment flagged and getting temporarily blocked, then being banned with no explanation for (politely) asking why. Some members getting openly threatened or blocked for questioning the moderation. That's how some big forums are run.

Things could always be worse, I think the best phrasing is how much better could they be, really? I'm new here but I think things are pretty nice. It's a friendly and helpful community and that speaks to the tone set by the mods.

This forum is over moderated IMO. Other forums do fine with a much looser grip on content. Not saying it should be the wild west of profanity, spam, and random posts, but this forum is monitored as tightly as west germany. far tighter than any other forum I have ever seen. I wouldnt mind less moderation

For example someone asked about a pack size for hammocking, but because the post wasnt specifically about ONLY hammocking it was moved to the donating forum after I had posted in a thread. Now I cant see/edit/follow a thread I posted in. I've been told "that inappropriate" for some pretty benign content. Barely PG rated. Its annoying compared to most other forums and definitely discourages posting.

Could it be, members are being gently persuaded to become paying members? To have full access to all forums?

Communication is key. And possibly some solutions have been discussed.
But there will never be perfection, because life is not perfect.

Good luck to ALL of us!
