Couldn't find hangable trees - on the AT!

    Hey, all.

Just did an overnight on the AT, from N. Ga to S. North Carolina.
I planned it as a two-nighter, but on the second day all I encountered was dead trees!

I'd heard there'd been fires in this area (just north of the GA-NC border) in recent years. And a lot of the trees were still standing. But they showed no evidence of buds or any other growth or greenery, contrary to their younger counterparts. And many of 'em were already leaning or profoundly beat up by insects or other critters.

I kept walking, and looking, and finally made it back to my truck.

Anyone else find themselves in a situation like this on the AT? Ever decide a "dead" tree was sturdy enough to hang for one night? What criteria did you use to decide?

I know there are tips (a Shug video, most likely) on how to set up your hammock/tarp using just your hiking poles. I guess I need to watch that again and practice it.

    TIA for any tips.

I’ve come across areas like that. I was on the Mountain to Sea trail north of Blowing Rock. I was camping off trail in what looked like a ton of trees but every other one was dead. I finally found two that were alive but decided against it due to so many others nearby that could fall over.

Walked a couple miles down the trail and found another spot to hang.

I’ve not hiked the AT in Georgia yet so can’t comment on that.

OF COURSE Shug has a video on this topic.

Shug gathers the tribe's knowledge, adds to it and preserves it in the form of awesome videos. I'm not sure if Bard or Shaman is a better description of Shug, but in an earlier age he would sit in the place of honor round the campfire, while we made offerings of espresso and pop tarts to him.

Same situation, different context. I found myself in a forest of baby trees on the Ouachita trail one night, from a previous clear cut. Right where I’d planned on stopping for the night. I usually hiked until sunset on that trail, so it was well after when I finally found a place.

I wouldn’t try hanging from my trekking poles, if it were me. From what I’ve read, they aren’t strong enough.

Disregard my last comment about the poles. I need my eyes checked, I guess.

You CAN get trekking pole strong enough to hang from if you like: https://www.tensaoutdoor.com/product...rekking-treez/

Yup... I'll be watching Shug's video a few times and practicing its techniques before I head out again...

Some places are just difficult! I was out scouting a new park yesterday that had designated camping spots. All were set up for tents and there wasn't a single tree that was (a) healthy and (b) properly spaced. I then went to the lean to sites; same thing. So I'll either need to go elsewhere or bring a tent if I'm going there.
