SC - Ellicott Rock Wilderness - Fork Mountain Trail Loop 5/22 & 5/23

For anyone interested, I’m planning to backpack the Chattooga River, Fork Mountain and Foothills Trail loop the weekend of 5/22 & 5/23. The plan is to meet-up at the Burrells Ford Campground in Mountain Rest, SC late morning/lunch time on Saturday and hike along the Fork Mountain trail ~10ish miles until we locate a suitable river camp site. Hang there and enjoy camp dinner/stories and then complete the loop along the CRT and Foothills Trail on Sunday.

I’ve never been to Ellicott Rock Wilderness before but this looks like a reasonable drive for Ga, Western NC, and Upstate SC forum members. Hiking should be moderate with not a lot of elevation change. We’re not planning any group meals so plan to pack/carry whatever supplies you’ll want on hand. Anyone who wants to join is welcome. So far it’s me and TallPaul on the trip roster. If you’re interested please confirm attendance by responded to this thread. We’ll grab lunch at the Campground Saturday while waiting for those who respond to show before heading out on the trail.

Do any of the folks that previously attended the Burrells Ford hang have either the GPS coordinates of where you hung or a description?

I know it was upriver around 1-1.5 miles. I found an old GrannyPat note saying it was close to a he East Fork Chattooga river junction.

It was literally at the bridge over the East Fork.
Folks camped on the left and right side of the bridge but you don't cross it.
I haven't been through there in a few years, but the last time i was, it had grown up some and was not nearly as large and open as I remember.
That's not necessarily a bad thing as it was well used.

Thanks Swampfox. I’m not sure we’ll need a big camp but it’s nice knowing there’s an option.

We used to call that Boy Scout camp because there was often a troop there on the weekends. Haven’t been up that way in years and wish I could join y’all, but we will be up in the Smokies that weekend.

Bumping this up. 3 weeks out and would enjoy having a few more SE backpackers join us. Looks to be a nice starter trip before the summer season.

Here's a map showing the location.
We will meet at Burrells Ford Parking area but likely start the loop hike at Sloan Bridge. We plan to camp along the Chattooga. If you want an easier day 2, you could just hike back to your car at Burrells Ford.

Does this mean we would drive back to the Fork Mtn access on SC 107 and leave vehicles there?

We plan to meet at Burrells Ford campground/parking area then drive up to Sloan parking lot. If ya wanted to do the partial loop, then leave the car at Burrells Ford.
