REI sells a green mat - like a door mat. It is NOT UL. I only take it when kayak camping because the drysuit has built-in latex booties and you don’t want to stand on anything that would puncture while changing in/out. Once in camp, it becomes a welcome mat. If hiking, I’d only need to put shoes on the ground in front of the hammock. The pack is hung on the hammock suspension line. If it’s going to be wet, I’d just have flipflops on the ground and hiking boots would be hung under the tarp too.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I just cut a small foot mat out of a section of Walmart Tent Fly. Using it for 5 years now. When it wears out I have enough material to make another dozen or so

On the AT; a small tyvek sheet (and camp shoes for life!)

On the pct; nothing, maybe my empty pack

I never could adjust to a ground covering. I change in the hammock and like to take a lightweight chair for my pack and shoes when I sleep. I also like a set of crocs when I know I’ll be spending lots of time around camp. They help when changing if I need to stand.

Everything is either in the hammock or the pack or in my bear cannister.

    under the hammock

I bought this Tyvek ground sheet from Luxe Hiking Gear. They sell it in four different sizes. Brand new, it’s a bit noisy, but it works pretty good. I prob just need to throw it in the washing machine a few times to soften it up.

I have a “picnic tarp” I found on Amazon — it’s mostly waterproof, and folds very small. I also have a sheet of Tyvek into which I put corner grommets to stake down. It weighs a lot less than the tarp, but it’s not broken-in enough yet to be quiet underneath. I tend to sleep in socks, and putting down my feet in a pine forest is too likely to fill my hammock with debris.
