Amber, I have a top loader w/o agitator. I have washed my JRB quilts, down jackets, and 1 DIY down quilt in it with no issues. I followed the instructions from JRB that are posted HERE except I used my top loader without agitator.

"The older I get, the more I appreciate my rural childhood. I spent a lot of time outdoors, unsupervised, which is a blessing." Barbara Kingsolver
My sentiments exactly. I have a frontloader and it's just way too easy to do in the machine vs any of the hand wash methods I've seen. I can't speak for anyone else but, with an additional rinse in the machine, I also feel much more confident of getting all the soap out using the machine method.
The excess soap wasn’t even a concern for me. I used the Revivex for down (first time) and boy, that cap is TINY! I don’t care HOW concentrated it is, 4 caps of that was like adding less than 4 coke bottle caps of detergent. I did do the extra rinse...you know, just in case.
Considering how expensive and somewhat delicate good quilts are, see what an acknowledged expert sez:

I have a bottle that expired. Instead of chancing it, I'll spend another $9 and actually use the product this time
Right. It turned out fine this time, and the quilt sold (yay!) but it’ll probably be hand washing for all of my DIY quilts. Like I said, I have WAY less faith in my own work...
On the bright side, I’ll have more of my “own work” to wash before long. I needed a lighter set of quilts, so I was selling this one to pay for the fabric and down. Only $80 out of pocket for a new set of UL 40* quilts. I’ll take it.
Any idea on how much down detergent to use when washing in a tote vs. machine? If the package says 1oz, I'm not sure I want to use 1oz in a tote with half the amount of water as a machine.
Start with a very small amount- you can always add more but rinsing out detergent that you used too much of is much harder. I like Atsko Sport Wash for washing gear.
