Solo Trip - Lineville Gorge South Loop

Originally had this planned for next week with my brother but he injured his leg and rain looks to be in the forecast for next week. Really wanted to get across Spence Ridge so I went a week early hoping water levels were passable. Left work on Friday and headed up to Wolf Pit Trail Head. Got a late start at 5pm and did ~5.5 miles to just short of the Chimneys. Made camp in the dark at one of the gaps and then did 11 miles day 2 to camp at the river near Daffodil Flats. Finished today with a 6+ mile trip along the Lead Mine Trail and MST to get about 23 miles total on the loop. Kicked my butt and reminded me I’m not as young as I once was. Hoping to do this again in the fall when time allows me to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Definitely a special place. April with the wild flowers in bloom is beautiful up there. Rangers/trail crew had recently cut a lot of downfall along the river trail which helped, they also recently re-cut a significant portion of the Lead Mine Trail. But the start of that one plus the MST from the river to the Wolf Pit Trail are crazy straight up the ridge with no switch backs. Painful.

Getting better at setting up my hammock but still tweaking my sleep system. Appreciate all the support/tips from various forum members. It’s definitely a different experience than my years in a tent.

Gorgey bits are my favourite haunts, panoramic overlooks & exploring the dark narrowing canyons...

    Thanks for sharing, Twistytee.

Looks like a lot of fun!

It appears the deciduous trees are starting to bloom. At what elevation was the first photo taken?

Thanks - gorge trips are fun but your legs really feel it when finished.

Leaves were out at the lower elevations and starting to bud out up top. I didn’t post those photos in sequence along my route which was counterclockwise starting at Wolf Pit. The first photo was taken off the Mountain to Sea trail looking at Shortoff Mountain. I was at 1750 according to my garmin. Shortoff Mtn is 2900’ and the highest point of the loop is Table Rock at 3900’. The river is down around 1200’ when I crossed on the last day to make my way back up to Wolf Pit.

Always a fun loop. 23 miles in the gorge shouldn't be underestimated. Leadmine and the LGT look relatively calm on the topo profile, but the constant up and down will make you feel the burn. I have done the loop in 1 night, but usually it's 2 and 3 actually gives you some time to stop and enjoy the views. Well done.

Great adventure! Can't beat taking 3 days to backpack that route in the Gorge. Dvankirk is spot on in regards to how LGT & Leadmine lull one on the map.

Looks like a fun trip. Don’t forget about that small hill from Saddle Camp to the Chimneys. I’ve stopped to catch my b... I mean admire the views... frequently on that portion.
How did all the gear work out?

Paul, your definition of "small hill" and mine are drastically different..

funny you brought that up Paul as that was the first thing I hit Sat am. There had to be three or four large downed trees on that pitch that I had the climb around/over - greatly added to my “viewing pleasures”.

The kit worked out well. I really liked the Darien and the Thunderfly. I also picked-up a 3 season Golite quilt from another forum that came in clutch when temps dipped into the low 40s. Still trying to get the 3/4 UQ to lay correctly on the asymm. Shortening the far right shock cord suspension at the foot end forces it to run taught against my calves and I don’t have the option to let it ride over the top due to the integrated bug net. I’ll keep tweaking until I get it right since I appreciate the added space savings in my pack.
