By the way, for future trips you can check the river levels here:

And there is a gauge in the backcountry area as well here:

Congaree NP is actually the place that convinced me to start hammock camping after I spent two very miserable days hiding from the heat, biting flies, and storms in a very soggy tent. I look forward to seeing your adventures deeper in the swamp next time.
I can definitely see tenting in Congaree during heat/bug season not being a good time!

Thanks for linking those, that is helpful info for anyone who might want to visit Congaree. I did check the gauges through the NPS site before heading out. It was tough for me to line up the water levels with what was actually going to be on the ground. Even looking back now I'm not clear what I should be really taking away from the gauge levels.

According to the NPS site (linked below), flood stage for Cedar Creek is 8 ft and for Congaree River is 15 ft. I was there Dec 27-29 2020. The gauge readings for those 3 days were ~7', 7.5' & 7' for Cedar and ~14.5', 13' & 12' for Congaree. The last time that Cedar was >8' was Dec 6 and for Congaree >15' was Dec 4. All this to say, I don't know why the trails were flooded and not sure what I can take away from the gauges on a future visit.

Thanks mando, Congaree looks like it would be a fun place to explore in a kayak
