Warbonnet Ridgerunner Made holes in HG Dyneema Winter Palace

I used my winter palace with my ridge runner for the first time a few days ago and in the course of a 4 day hike, the spread bars on the ridge runner tore holes in the dyneema camo HG winter palace. I was also using my poles to lift up the side and had it staked out far but still, the spread bars did damage. I have 2 questions:

    1. How can I prevent this from happening again?

    2. What would be the best way to repair the tarp? It came with some strips of material to use for repairs. I was thinking I would clean it with alcohol first and then apply them, if someone has a better way I would appreciate it. thank you

To help it not happen a gain spread your tarp wider, use pullouts and be vigilant when you get into the hammock and watch as not to poke the tarp.

Dyneema can be patched with duct tape.
I think I would use alcohol to clean before applying the provided patches.

Dyneema punctures very easily but is hard to tear on the pull.

There are some products that go on the ends of poles to help with poking.

Thanks Shug, I don't think I could have staked it much wider, maybe I could go higher, that would certainly increase the distance. I'll order some of those.

This is how I get into my bridge hammock. It is virtually impossible to describe, but I will give it a try.

When you are bent and getting ready to sit in the hammock, put your hands as far back and down toward the middle of the hammock as you can and put your weight on your hands as you sit back. In that position hold your weight with your hands before your legs and butt make too much contact and it greatly reduces how much the spreader bar swings back because now there is weight pulling down instead of just pushing back. I have short t-rex arms but it still works for me. With longer arms I suspect it works better.

That's the best I can do. Good luck.

If you have the older RR with the metal hardware at the spreader bars, I believe ArrowHead has some rubber bumpers you can put on the hardware - or make your own with a piece of old inner tube. Shug’s link goes to a description of a newer product for the newer RR suspension. I’ve used both; they work. And I’ve used a short (11 ft) superfly with the RR for quite a while and never had an issue. But it was summer so it was guyed wide and mostly in porch mode.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I’m sooo sorry, Ike. I have a repair to make on my DCF tarp now, too. Sort of similar circumstances, except mine came from the wind pushing my tarp against the tent stake holding up my pack at the head end of my hammock. By morning, it had worn a nickel sized hole a few inches below the ridgeline. It hurt my heart! I’m still debating on how I want to fix it. I’ve got a little 0.5oz Dyneema left from various DIY projects that I could make a patch with, but I’m leaning toward the alcohol and repair tape on either side approach. It’s not a large hole, after all. Anyway, wanted to offer my sympathies.

I put two holes in my HG Palace last summer at different times with my spreader bar ends, due to an extreme storm pitch in high wind and not paying attention when I got in and out of the hammock. Patched the tarp once with Tenacious Tape and the second time with dyneema repair tape. Both worked really well and you have to really look to see the patched spots.

Got myself one of the new Ridgerunners and have already installed the Bridge Buttons Shug linked to. Looks like the perfect solution. I'm even considering cutting the hardware plates off my older RRs and switching to the new suspension design/Buttons.

They will likely put a piece of repair tape on it... Save yourself the time and shipping cost and do it yourself.

It's only painful the first time...embrace the battle scars and rejoice that DCF is so easily repaired.
