Beta Request: Crater Lake, Indian Peaks Wilderness (CO)

Hi friends! I snagged a mid-August permit for Crater Lake in the IPW this year. I've camped in IPW several times, but I've never been all the way to Crater Lake. I normally shun designated campsites, but it sounds like it's worth it!

Can anyone give me some intel on Crater Lake for hammocking? For example,

    1. Any best campsites to target? I'm coming in on Friday, so hopefully will have a better pick than the Saturday/Sunday crew. And if there's a particularly good one, I might try to scoop it up if anyone leaves on Saturday morning.

    2. Any issues with hammocks at the designated sites? The last time I was up in the Cascade Creek BZ, I was surprised by a ranger who checked my permit. So they definitely make it all the way to the lake each day, and I don't know if there's any anti-hanging sentiment.

    3. Any issues with leaving gear at the campsite while exploring? Anyone hiking that far in is probably cool, but I so infrequently camp in populated locations like this. I never think twice about leaving my expensive quilts all day when I'm not at a designated campsite.

    4. I have 3 nights up there. Anything I should check out? Would I day hike to the top of Pawnee Pass be worth it?

    5. How's the fishing!?

    Thanks!

    Harry (ufdigga)

Crater Lake gets hundreds of thousands visitors in a calendar year.

Thanks! Just to clarify, I'm talking about Crater Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness in Colorado, not Crater Lake National Park.

Oopps, near Maroon Bells. I've been to Maroon Bells two times, and this is spectacular country.

    Take the virtual tour...

Still the wrong lake (so many Crater Lakes, I guess!), but thanks for sharing that video. It's beautiful!

I'm looking for intel on hammocking and camping at the designated sites around Crater Lake, in the Lone Eagle Cirque, in the middle of Indian Peaks Wilderness NW of Boulder (just south of RMNP).

I’m going with a small group the end of July. I’ll let you know about the crater lake designated areas when I get back. Three people in our group use a hammock.

I've hammock camped there underneath the beauty of Lucky Lindy's mountain (Lone Eagle) during the Perseid meteor shower. I honestly do not remember which site I had, but it was kind between the two lakes and had no problem at all finding trees to hang between. Wish I had better beta than that!

I think site #8 or maybe #9 was the one I used. There are plenty of trees.
