Question What's the difference in lay between the different hammock makers?

Maybe it is discussed before but I'm wondering:

If all respected vendors we know would make an 11 ft hammock, with all the variables the same. Meaning same fabric, same ridgeline, same width, symmetrical lay etc. Would there be a difference in feel or lay between these hammocks?

    Thanks,
    Gregor

The biggest variable in my opinion is fabric choice, with length being a close second. You can also change the feel of a gathered end hammock by how you hang it, at least to some extent, eg. hang angle matters a bit. I suspect that the answer to your query is that you would probably not be able to tell a difference between the hammocks in your example by simply lying down in them. You might notice some differences in quality of craftsmanship perhaps. I'm dead certain you could tell the difference in stitch quality between a hammock I made and one made by the respected vendor group here. Mine wouldn't look as good.

You're taking away all the differences that make the details.

I find that in the WB El Dorado (and I assume the BB XLC) I need the foot end raised up much higher and need to lay closer to the head end compared to my DW Chameleon and Half-Zip hammocks. I think the difference is the WB bugnet, how it shapes the footbox and head area...definitely need to use the head side tie outs. I find I don't need them in either of my Dutchware hammocks.

I have the older 70D nylon fabric for the El Dorado (it's now 40D Dreamtex). I find the Dutchware Hexon 1.6 a little more stretchy. Both are comfortable though.

With all variables being the same w/ the hammock body, the difference in lay/feel comes down to the cut of the bug net, length of the ridgeline, and how the ends are gathered (sewn channel vs. whipped ends).

If two hammock vendors make a netless 11' hammock, 58" wide, out of the exact same fabric, 110" ridge line, and the same sewn end channels, they will feel exactly the same b/c they are basically the same hammock just w/ different tags on them.

    Thanks for the replies.
    Makes sense to me now.

That means that I now need to find out about the different fabrics and their characteristics.

I had the chance to compare my Chameleon to a HG hammock. I kept the suspension in place and just swapped hammocks. I dont think I could tell the difference if i was blindfolded. Fabric on both was 1.6.

So my answer is not much difference if the basic shape and features are similar. Something like the Warb with a dedicated footbox might be more noticeable .

Also keep in mind there are different 1.6 fabrics. There's HyperD and Hexon, and they both have a little different feel.
