I've seen some horror stories online, people getting injured. Is this an actual big concern, or just a few stupid people, or what? What are the safety issues?
Stupid people are everywhere and yes we have them in the hammock community

Main safety issues are not learning how to use your gear properly. Find a group hang to attend and let the folks know you a new hanger and want their input. Never been to a hang where there were not folks ready to help a new hanger,

I am 6ft 2 and 285+ lbs and my favorite hammock is the BlackBird ( not the XLC ) but as you are 6ft 5 you will probably find the XL a better fit. Go for the DL 1.7. It will give you more support and less give.

As to GE hammocks the ones I like are ones I had custom made by a company no longer in business. Go for at least 11ft long and about 64 to 66 inches wide.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
