Something else to consider is moths. I have not had it happen to the point of noticing significant damage, but I notice moths on my gear when I’m setup in camp often. I think it’s exacerbated by the sweat and oil buildup on certain kinds of gear as well, hammock bodies especially. Moths are pretty gross and something that has some buildup would be a buffet to a moth.

Moths are not going to "attack" nylon or other synthetic fabrics! 1) Moths feed on nectar; and 2) if you mean moth larvae, they feed on natural materials and are not going to be tempted by NYLON, no matter what it smells like!

looks like it could have been rubbed against a rock or something maybe while hanging or if the hammock is on the outside of your pack. just-food for thought.

I agree with the mouse theory, having had a number of such incidents on gear over the years.
