    Pack sizes?

I've got my eye on the Economy Burrow and Incubator underquilt and topquilts either 20° or 30°. Have some Eno stuff now (Ember UQ and Vesta TQ) because they were in stock, available, I'm anxious to get out vs waiting 7 weeks. I'll be three season camping in various parts of New York where lows can be mid/high 20s at times spring and fall.

Question is on pack sizes listed on the HG site. Says 30° F = 5.5 Liters and 20° F = 8.5 Liters. I'm new to all this and that seems like a massive difference in size going into a backpack. Am I thinking about this wrong? Do people use diff stuff sacks to shrink them down more on the go?

Some people use em, some don't. In the stuff sacks, they are basically barely squishy rocks. Others will just cram the quilts in the pack. I have a 20F Econ Burrow/Incubator set, regular size/width and they use the 5.5L stuff sacks. I also have the Econ 20F and 40F Phoenix and a 40F Burrow, they all use the 4.5L stuff.

    You getting long/wide and/or overstuff?

Planned on just standard everything. Instinct says I'd be fine with 30f, wimpy me says 20f but concern (maybe it shouldn't be?) is the physical size they take up in a pack. Right around 30f is what I'd expect as lowest I'll be going.

This is primarily a function of the material from which the quilt is made; Econ quilts are 20D and Premium are 10D. Big difference, much more so than the advantage in compressibility of 950 vs 850FP down.

As far as warmth, it varies a lot from person to person but generally HG and most other quilt makers nowadays are using more down and skewing the ratings (in a good way) toward "comfort" and not just "survivability," so many people now find the ratings fairly accurate. However, if you consider yourself a bit cold-natured it is probably best to get something rated about 10deg warmer than you expect, especially with the UQ. It's not quite as critical with the TQ because you can easily add clothing layers to augment the rating, whereas stacking quilts or using other measures to supplement the UQ can be pretty darn inconvenient and add even more volume to your backpack.

Thanks for the responses all! Great stuff. Also keep in mind that's just the size of the stuff sack we provide with the quilt. You can always compress them a bit further if you'd like with a compression bag.

I have a Gregory Baltoro 65 which I know is big enough to hold it all, just understanding the difference when something is likes 5.5 vs 8.5 liters.
