Are there any drawbacks to having Knotty Mods on your hammock? For instance, does it reduce your view? Is this mitigated by where the placement is? Where is the optimal place to put them?
Thanks!

As a minimalist who's not at all into foof and faff, for me this one mod I will get every time on a netless hammock! Got some on the 10ft Treerunner and they work out perfectly. I think that after I use the hammock more and am satisfied with the length of the shock cords I'll tack stitch them and cut off the excess length.
At SLD, Jared puts them in the head and foot areas, on the head and foot sides. This works for me. Dutch puts them both on the foot end, and that isn't bad at all, but I like Jared's approach a bit better. Either way, not a deal breaker for me. Of course the usual YMMV applies.

The only drawback would likely be weight - if a handful of grams make a difference to you (does to some). Since it's just a bit of shock cord in the hem of the hammock, it shouldn't add or detract from whatever view you might have already had with said hammock, as it doesn't add any fabric or material. If anything, since it helps to add a little bit of structure to what would otherwise potentially be a floppy area of existing fabric, it might even help the view slightly. Depending on if you make it permanent or adjustable, you can play around and experiment with that as well.
I haven't made a DIY hammock with a knotty mod in a while, so I can't remember the measurements exactly - somewhere in the original thread there were suggestions on placement.
This thread is proof that the Internet can read my mind. I am exchanging emails with Jarod right now about where to put knotty mods!
Great! Y'all answered exactly what I needed to hear!
Cmoulder, I'm planning on a 9' SLD Treerunner, per your suggestion on my "Running with a Hammock" thread. So if I lay "head left/ feet right" then I should order the knotty mods "head left/ feet right"? Also, what's your take on fixed versus adjustable ridgeline?
Thanks!
Bobonli, please fill us in of what Jared says!
To paraphrase, “ pick whatever you want and I will make it for you”
I go back-and-forth, head right and head left, though I’m mostly a head right feet left type of person. I’m not sure whether I want to put those modifications on both ends of the Hammock at both the foot and shoulders. He said that there are so many different people with different tastes it’s hard to make a suggestion.
So I am going to flip a coin after I finish treating my clothes with tick repellent!
Assuming you don't have a double layer hammock or some sort of fabric where it would really matter, if you put the knotty mod say head left and feet right, you can always turn the hammock inside out and now it's reversed, if your someone that tends to switch your orientation in the hammock.
As far as where to have them (foot end, or head end, or both) Knotty originally came up with the idea for the foot end I believe, in order to keep his top quilt from falling out on a netless hammock. That said, it's helpful on the head end as well when you don't have a net suspended by a ridgeline to keep some of the extra fabric out of your face (if that sort of thing bothers you). I don't use a no-net hammock much these days, but prefer a knotty mod on both ends when I do, to match my lay - head left, feet right.
I really like them, but don’t find them essential. Mine are on the foot end on both sides.
They do reduce visibility when taut on the non-foot side, but I like that feature. On the foot side its great to help keep the UQ and other stuff in the hammock. tightening the non-foot side is useful when you want to provide a wind or sun screen on that side.
I always lay head left/ feet right. I sometimes roll to one side or the other, but it's still always basically on the same diagonal. With this diagonal as a given, do y'all think putting the Knotty Mods in those locations is the best choice?
