    Hammock using Selvedges?

OK, this is probably a really dumb question, but do you need to hem the edges of the hammock material when making a DIY gathered end hammock, if you use the full width of the fabric, so the selvedges are at the edges and won't ravel? (Does that make sense?)

In my experience, no. I made one of 1.1 oz. ripstop nylon years ago- it's never had issues, though its use has been light. Some selvedges are neatly woven while others have loose fibers sticking out and punctures where the tenterhooks fasten the yardage to the loom. I like to hem this kind for appearance's sake.

Most people trim the selvage and/or roll it into the hem before sewing. I've done the latter on the couple I've made.

I trim it. Wouldn't have mattered, but it would bother me as much as leaving a bunch of dirt and crumbs on the car floor then throwing the mat over the top.

Isn't that what the mat is for?
