    Overwhelmed with Underquilts

I live in the south (Texas) and hammock year round. I’ve put off purchasing an underquilt for far too long. BUT, I’m ignorant of all the options, and the pros/cons of each option. Mostly it’s needed for spring/fall, definitely nothing below 30 degrees actual temperature (I say this because I know ratings are usually based on survival not comfort). So what’re y’all’s thoughts? A 40 degree with a bit of overfill? A 30 degree? Any brands to stay away from? I typically hike to wherever I camp so weight matters. Also, at those temps would I be better off with an over quilt instead? Or in addition to the underquilt???? Basically feel free to school me in all things relevant, and thank you all in advance.

    Hey Rmil,

    Make it easy.

Hammock Gear Econ 20 degree, full length, Incubator for an UnderQuilt.

Get their Econ 20 degree Burrow, Topquilt, if you need one.

They wont disappoint. Best bang for the buck. If you are a gram weenie you might want to look elsewhere but the few ounces in difference between their Econ and their Premium Quilts, were not a factor for me.

    Have fun.

You want a top quilt and an underquilt. The top quilt works like a tent campers sleeping bag (keeping your top side warm). The underquilt works like a tent campers sleeping pad (keeping you warm from beneath you).

I think most manufacturers are ok, so long as you avoid the eBay/Amazon brands. I’ve personally had good luck with the hammock forums for sale section.

I’ve had the good fortune to get a hammock gear incubator underquilt from there.

I can also tell you good things about the thermarest Vespa. It’s pretty great.
So are warbonnet quilts (top and under).
I’ve also bought an underquilt directly from hammock gear. It’s fantastic.

If you’re hiking longer distances to camp, you may want a 10d or even 7d fabric, and likely a higher fill power. That will drive up the cost, but also lower the weight of the resulting quilt.

And remember, another way to add a few degrees to an existing underquilt is to use an underquilt protector. I have one for each of my hammock sets.

    Rmil,

Forgot to add the Hammock Gear temp rating is spot on for comfort level, not survival level.

Thanks! With the temp ratings being accurate, would 30 degree be fine, or is 20 a better option. Born and raised here I defer all cold climate info to you guys up north.

I'd personally be inclined to get a 20* quilt set - they work fine in hotter temps (you can always vent). My first quilt set was 20*, and I was happy with it for two years. I finally got a 0* quilt set after hitting the limits of that 20* quilt set. Later, I got a 40* quilt set for warmer temps.

Thank you...I wasn’t at all accounting for venting to mitigate its effectiveness.

Keep your eyes peeled on the hammock gear website under discount quilts. Best thing being they ship immediately, and at a savings to boot. Check often... here one day.... gone the next.
All the cottage venders I’ve shopped with have been fantastic! Best advise I can give... it hurts, but spend really good money on high end gear that you really will be proud to own. You won’t regret it

Thanks Kmazuro and Shug, I’ll keep an eye out on the discount page, and that’s gotta be the only video I haven’t watched of yours, so thanks for letting me know it was there.
