First backpacking trip with a hammock- Chattooga River Trail

Went on my first overnight backpacking hammock trip (and my wife's first backpacking trip period). Hiked in about 6-7 miles. There were not as many campsites as I would've expected, so ended up settling for a suboptimal spot where my head was hanging lower than the base of the tree that end was hanging from and my lower half was over the bank which made staking out the tarp a real experience. Still got the BBXLC in its sweet spot thanks to the level. Pictures don't really show the awkwardness. Never would've gotten another tent in this spot.

Overnight low of ~40F, 0% chance of rain but it sprinkled for a couple hours anyways. Loved hanging out under the spacious tarp. Great success. Woke up so toasty I was walking around camp with short sleeves and no socks in my sandals while neighbors had their puffy jackets on.

I've got the HG Quest which worked really well and is perfect for around GA. I might get something with doors for trips out West.

I’ve been thinking of hitting that area up.

And you couldn’t tell the hang looked challenging from that pic

It's great that your first overnight 'hang' experience was a success. When I was a boy, my dad, brothers & I used to hike quite a bit in the Cohutta Wilderness Area which is in the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests. It's a really pretty place & a great place to hike... at least it was back in the '70's! Might be a good destination for you at some point for another adventure.

The Cohutta is a favorite of mine for sure. Couldn't convince the wife to partake in any stream crossings on her first trip, though. Maybe on spring break we'll do a trip there.

I thought the same thing when I got back and that was the only picture I took. You would think I would've taken a picture showing that my tarp was tied off to a root at the head end. I was wearing flip flops when I took the picture, so couldn't back far enough up the hill to really get a good angle. It was pretty sweet, though. Hope my wife's hammock gets here in time for the next trip.

Good stuff. I was in a hammock along the Chattooga River myself 2 weeks ago. If you carry trekking poles, or find a nice pair of sticks, you can set that tarp up in "porch mode" for an even more spacious experience. Sure beats layin on the ground.

Pulling off a weird and challenging hang and still getting it "just right" is one of my favorite things about hammock camping.
