Silnylon is ever so slightly heavier and holds water more than silpoly, which also has a bit more of a crinkly sound than silnylon. I also think silnylon might be a bit cheaper but slightly more durable. Both are good choices, but if I were to order again I’d probably go with silpoly. Best of luck!
I’d go with silpoly because it doesn’t hold water like silnylon.

I prefer silpoly, but my silnylon seems more durable but have had no issues with either so far. I have had my silnylon become fairly heavy in extended rain periods, but it has never leaked. It does seem to hold on to water much more readily.
I can definitely vouch for that. After a couple years I had no issues switching all my tarps from nylon to poly. But this past weekend I tripped on my line and heard a "pop" sound. Tore a 6" hole in my tarp. I'm confident nylon wouldn't have done that in this scenario. It's more "rubbery" and would have taken the stress. But I'm still replacing it with a poly tarp. Just be careful!
Ive got a MiniFly in SilPoly, its less than a month old and I've only used it on a few trips, but I prefer it to SilNylon. Thats at least for now assuming it holds up.
Thanks all... seems to be unanimous...

Not to mess with your decision but I go with the SilNylon. Where I go - kayak camping - it is not “just a hike back to the car” if something fails. I need the most reliability out of my gear. Also - to be fair - because the tarp is carried in a kayak, I’m not so concerned about a little extra weight if wet. Even if hiking, the percent of the times I’m actually in a rain storm is pretty small. Unless I do it on purpose, I plan trips for good weather. So this “little heavier when wet than wet SilPoly” is seldom and issue.
But one thing that would lead me to SilPoly is the fabric options. Some patterns are just not available in SilNylon.
That Mini-Fly will be a nice match to my SL BlackBird for longer ground (rather than kayak) adventures. It will become my “Always with me” tarp. The highest percent of my tarp use is during the day! Hike in, put up a hammock to relax after lunch, and look right up into the sun - not good. That mini-fly makes a good sun shield.
If I have someone else with me and we hang off left/right sides of a tree - then Dutch’s wide Asymmetrical tarp gives us each a “sun shield” panel.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
Well... to close this out I did order a minifly today. Although most seemed to recommend the poly, I did end up opting for the nylon. I do hate to ask advise and then disregard. In my situation, I opted for durability. The majority of my time in the woods are one nighters and 95% of the time I would say dry so for the most part water absorption won’t be an issue. so I’m hoping for me the nylon is probably the best choice. Thanks for the replies!
