    Half A Hammock Stand?

I've got several stout, shady trees in my yard, but unfortunately they're too far apart to hang a hammock. Today I tried an experiment that shows promise. One end of my Ridgerunner was tied to a tree, the other end to a stepladder, secured by a tie-down strap attached to one of these corkscrew-type dog anchors on the far side. It worked (sort of) but felt kinda rickety and the ladder wasn't quite tall enough.
It seems to me a better system could be constructed, one end secured to a tree, and the other to some portable stand, allowing movement around the yard. Of course, the key to it would be the strap and stake in the ground. Of course, I could just buy a full hammock stand, but the ones I've looked at aren't long enough, or tall enough to allow a tarp to be attached.
I'd like to engineer something from stuff bought at the hardware store, but I don't have a firm concept in mind. Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Tensa Solo. I have a full Tensa 4. It can be "split" to hang two hammocks from one tree. There are pictures on the tensaoutdoor web site. http://tensaoutdoor.com

I agree - take a look at it for inspiration, and then think of how you could make one yourself with cheaper materials, knowing that you don't need it to be lightweight and collapsible for travel.

Or look at it and imagine how you can use it both in the back yard and for travel.

Mine is just a closet pole anchored w/ ratchet straps and rebar stakes. Could it be less? Yes, but that is just what I had on hand.

This can also be done with a tall tripod lashed together at the top- I used 6' round wooden fence posts we had lying around. I attach the hammock to one tree; the other end of the hammock suspension goes up and over the tripod and down at an angle to wrap around the base of the other tree (which is too far away from the first tree to attach directly). This arrangement is quite stable. These posts come sharpened at one end- they dig into the ground and don't slide.

Here's what I ended up with. As luck would have it, a neighbor threw out these steel tent support poles and I rigged up this contraption.IMG_0415.jpg
