Newb Trying to Figure Out Best / Easiest myog Suspension System for Underquilt...

After lots of internet digging... I am confused.

I am attempting to add suspension to my 3/4 length underquilt.

Should I sew a grosgrain loop to each corner with a length of shock cord (probably using 3/32") connecting to the main hammock suspension?

Or sew lengthwise-channels and run a large loop of shock cord around the entirety? --the downside of this is that it would require quite a bit more shock chord

Is there some sort of consensus on which of these may be better?

It seems to me that the only 'consistent' aspect is channels with shock cord on the short ends; so I am planning to add this myself as well.

There is no “best”. There are basically 5 underquilt suspension styles with pros and cons:

Side channel: well documented. Heavy. Taco blanket. Reduced visibility. Foot annoyance.
    Wookie: light. Easy. Floppy sides.
4-corner: simplistic design. Not very adjustable. Reduced visibility
Clew: self adjusting. Complex design. Light.
Spandex / stretch mesh: like Speer Snugfit. Heavy. Self adjusting. Lots of cool fabric options.

The easiest to make is probably the 4-corner design. The easiest to hang would be the Wookie, clew, or spandex designs, with clew and spandex design being self adjusting.

I did write-ups on the clew and spandex designs:

    Clew suspensions

    Spandex underquilts

I’m so impressed with the clew idea. Your assessment of the currrnt shock cord suspension system mirrors my experience ( limited as it is). I’ve just finished making my second underquilt and find that I need primary, secondary, tertiary and even a slew of additional cords over the ridge line to limit the air pockets.

As soon as I get some more shock cord I’m going to give the clew a try

Thanks for the fantastic write up!

Thanks again for the fantastic write up about the clew suspension for underquilts. Couple of questions though,
    - is 1/16 shock cord stout enough for a winter quilt? Is there a suggested/guess re how heavy a quilt the thin cord can support?

    - also, does the number of baffles matter? You used 8 strands in your clew and it looks like you have 8 baffles, is this just a coincidence or is it a good idea to have a strand per baffle?

    Cheers
    Ken

    Oops,
Seems you already stated that you need “at least” 8 strands, which just happened to line up with your 7 baffles.

Since I have nine baffles in my quilts, I’m guessing 10 strands of the thin cord should be enough to support a 23 oz quilt.

I still need to test mine, but I just finished a synthetic wookie style, aka sld trail winder type, it's basically a quilt sewn to a slightly smaller hammock and just hung beneath. Suppose to be super easy, and eliminate a lot of the quilt 'fiddle factor'
i put channels along both sides with shock cord so I can tighten up the sides so they're not floppy.

1/16” is plenty for Clews. Some of mine even use 1/32”.

My first ones used the four corner. The fix to make it all work were prussic loops on each end of the ridge line that I feed the shock cord through. Works similar to the “triangle thingies”. Cinched everything up tight. I also made the shock cord length adjustable with some cord lengths for tweaking. Worked super simple.

I typically now use a wilderness logics that I picked that has a continuous loop of shock cord through the side channels. I added a prussick version of a secondary suspension. I found I still needed the loops on the ridge for a snug fit with no gaps. Part of me still prefers the 4 corner on my old diy apex quilts though.though, for it’s simplicity. Both work equally well though.

Sorry Monkey Boy but I have been trying pretty similar things and now have a Rube Goldberg contraption that is rather confining. I really like the idea of the quilt matching the hammock ( like the clew appears to do) instead of forcing the hammock into a sausage roll with do-hickies all up and down the quilt.
