This trucker's hitch is new to me...

I found this very interesting. I've been using a version of the trucker's hitch to cinch down the corners of my tarps to the stakes... but I'm kinda surprised by this method. Looking forward to trying it out:

I can’t figure out what’s stopping that top bight slipping out of the loop. It looks like it’s just friction. That might be ok for a truck tarpaulin but I’m not sure I’d trust it under heavy load.

That looks like half a sheepshank, to take up some slack in the rope. And it is unstable under either too large or too small a load. But, for tarps and other moderate loads, it could be a nice alternative to have.

I learned that as the Truckee (Truckie) hitch. Its great because when you undo the half hitch that holds it and take the load off the line, the thing just unties itself. The Utube video where I first saw it, the guy demonstrating it was a beekeeper, and he learned it from his father. It is how he hold the bee hives on the truck while transporting them. It is a very reliable hitch.

I like the way our Japanese friend ties it. It is better than the way I currently do it. That extra twist after he feeds the bend into the loop is a nice touch and makes it more secure. Thanks for the link. I need to relearn this hitch or knot or whatever you want to call it.

For hammock/tarp use, I don't see many opportunities to use this. The common Truckers hitch is better for our purposes. The reason being, that loop with the bend through it takes up too much real estate. Unless your trees are 17 feet apart or so you may not have enough room to use this version.
