    Superior Hiking Trail Planning.

Hello, I'm starting to plan a backpacking trip up to the SHT for this summer. Dates TBD. Section TBD. I do know I'd like about 5 days to hike. DAily mileage less than 10. I want to see the trail and the area as opposed to blindly pound out miles. As I'm doing my own research I'll be honest and admit a complete lack of knowledge of the trail and area. So any suggestions tips and ideas would be most helpful. TIA.

    Ahhh MrPickl....
So many wonderful sections on that trail. Views of Lake Superior to the East and inland views to West.
    5 days huh?
One real good walk is Silver Bay to Lutsen. That is about 78 miles more or less.

Get the Guidebook for sure and small maps. The trail is well marked. You may have to share campsites from time to time. Prepare for bugs.

We did Temperance river to Highway 1 this past fall, and it was gorgeous. its roughly 50 miles(48.6). Our Itinerary for 5 days was
Temperance river -Dyers creek 9.1 mi
Dyers creek - Horseshoe 9.9 mi
    Horseshoe - S. Sonju Lk 9.7 mi
    S. Sonju Lk - Section 13 11.5 mi
    Section 13 - Highway 1 8.4 mi

We were a bit confused when planning where to park at Temperance river. We originally thought it was at the state park, but it is on Temperance rd. Just south of the SP campground entrance.

You'll have a great time! I've been doing sections here and there in the winter.

Like Shug linked check out their website and get the guidebook. I also like the set of pocket maps they sell. Anything north of Two Harbors is great hiking.

I'm in roughly the same boat, wanting to do a solo (with dog) 4-5 day SHT ramble, 10ish miles/day. No prior experience on the SHT. I have flexibility so will try to time it before or after the bug season, and after covid vaccination, whenever that may be. I'll tag along on this thread, if that is ok, since I'm trying to study up.

I agree with Shug, get the guidebook or at least the small pocket maps. Although I blindly pound out miles, I think the whole trail is wonderful with the best being north of Silver Bay.

The guidebook is great for clearly listing camps, trailheads, mileages, and water sources. I also downloaded the map they put out on Avenza for my last stretch of the trip, definitely found it worthwhile. I really a weekend trip I did which was south from Crosby-Manitou State Park. The Sonju Lake campsites looked great and I would say if you are looking for scenery over miles definitely plan to stop there. Also the Section 13 campsite a little farther south in the Lake County Road 6/7 section has a great overlook a stones throw from the campsite. Great place to enjoy dinner at sunset or a warm drink in the morning.

There are also a couple of shuttle services you can utilize so all my trips were park, get picked up by a shuttle, then walk back to the car. Makes planning significantly easier, definitely worth the money.

Is the guidebook something you carry with you, or just use for planning?

It’s a medium sized soft cover with lots of information. I wouldn’t bring it with me but I have seen others reading it at campsites.

For travel the pocket maps and the data sheet are all that you would need.
