    SRL tension vs shortening it

If having the SRL ever so slightly slack, why not just make it slightly shorter? Or is there more at play?
Sorry if it’s been well covered but I just need to understand the above question....as when I do manage a slight bit of give in the SRL (say able to deflect it 90* degrees between a few fingers) it seems a way more comfortable hang.
    Thanks in advance....

Often the tree spacing and angles of suspension can cause the ridgeline to slacken. Or be too tight.
I wrap mine around a small biner sometimes to take up the slack on a short hang.

If it is always looser you can put a small knot/loop in it - like an alpine loop or other that doesn’t take as much line - and use that as an anchor point for a ridgeline organizer or hammock head storage bag, place to clip a flashlight or put an arm of your sunglasses through it as a holder, etc.

You can always cut the SRL, take out a chunk, and splice in a piece that brings it to your desired length. Knots and splicing weaken the technical spec strength but it is still easily within what you would normally put on it. Unless you are also using it to pull a jeep.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Thanks for your replies, I should of been clearer: if it’s good to have a bit of slack why don’t we just run them shorter?

You actually don't want slack....rather you want it right where you can reach up and bend it a bit. Not guitat string tight but able to force a slight bend.
So if you use a ridgeline, ideally you would hang your hammock to achieve the slight bend. If it is slack as opposed to where you set it for your sweet spot then either your suspension is too high up the trees or your hang is too tight. Or both.

The purpose of the SRL is consistent sag in the hammock. Too much slack gives you more sag, but too tight gives you the same sag whether it's just a little tight or tight as a banjo string. You might be putting a lot of stress on your suspension components or trees or posts or whatever, but the sag isn't affected.

Now, it sounds as if you're finding you prefer a little more sag so the best course would be to shorten the SRL so that you achieve that same sag every time. (Assuming it's not an integrated net design, especially asymmetrical, where messing with the geometry could stress the net/zippers.) That's something with which you'll have to experiment to find out how much shorter... maybe throw in a marlinspike hitch or 2 with some dowels and carefully measure the length after loading so that the knots are settled.

It’s a trail lair with integrated net, the net is quite taut so if I shortened the SRL it may sit better....I’ll try the knot trick thanks cmoulder.

I find that putting an inch or two extra length in the SRL to create a bit of sag in SRL loosens the net up and frees up some movement in the body of the hammock. It does sag a little farther down towards you, but for me it’s worth it to loosen it up

Before you knot it, wrap a carabiner around it. Knots like that are likely life-long.
