Putting the whoopie on the CL is totally fine from a safety point of view. Slight disadvantage is that it adds a few inches to your minimum required hang distance.

Larking directly to the hammock is also fine, assuming you have a knob or bump to prevent it from slipping off when loaded.

I like to keep the whoopie and CL separate. That gives me the ability to use the whoopie if necessary on long hangs, or tie strap directly to the CL for extremely short hangs.

Thanks for the thoughts and experiences all, since I swap the slings over between hammocks I will keep it this way, good to know that my sixth sense is OK. I agree that any friction in this case would be potentially catostrophic but I'll be careful that's it only loaded statically apart from tightening when I sit in the hammock. Well that can't be helped I suppose.

Swap out your CLs with evo loops and the connection more-or-less becomes a detachable larkshead.

Not sure what an evo loop is or how this would work, sorry not quite up to speed on all the options the market offers. But the above method works well and it is a 30 second job to move the whoopie slings over to a different hammock.

I found that by keeping the CL on the hammock and lark heading to it with whoopie gives me the ability to connect to my MSH toggle directly with the CL if the trees are too close to use my whoopie.
I could do that also by using a biner between the CL and whoopie but I elected for no hardware.
As for a water break, I have some old cotton boot laces clove hitched around the line.
A day camping in the rain is better than a good day at work,

The EVO does seem “evolved” but, stupid question: is an EVO the same as a soft shackle or is it a special kind of soft shackle? Is this something you can buy pretty much anywhere Amstel line is sold?

I believe it's described as an evolved CL that can be used like a soft shackle.

And they can be bought from his ebay site which should be listed on the video info (under it).
