6x6, 12' posts for RR in yard, how far apart?

I'm having two 6x6, 12' posts sunk 4' deep for my new RR. I know the RR needs at least 15' but I was going to go out a bit more just in case. Good idea? I was thinking 16 or 18 feet apart. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for the help. I'm totally new to this.

You can't go wrong at 16' - 18' and I cant think of a good reason to set the posts at 15' or closer. Proceed and enjoy.

15 feet will work perfect. Think about a 16 foot 2x4 or larger connecting the post tops. This will make posts much more stable.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

Stupid question - if I put a post at the top, can I still practice putting up my tarp?

Hang the tarp below the top “rail”. Most your forces will be trying to pull those posts towards each other. A beam at the top, between the two posts, will mitigate that a lot. Pretend your posts are trees and that top beam is the first large branch.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I'd recommend NOT setting the posts in concrete. It would shorten the life of the posts. 4' with gravel would be plenty good. The rule of thumb is half as much in the ground as above ground, so a 12' post would be perfect. You could even go a bit deeper than 4' because I can't imagine needing it to be 8' high. Adding a top rail is a really good idea.

UPDATE: Spoken to a few folks this morning. 6x6, 12' cedar posts are running ~$200-300 each right now! Whoa, mama! I emailed Greg over at Warbonnet to ensure the optimal distance between posts for the Ridgerunner. Here is his helpful (and speedy) reply:

Ryan,With just using the dogbones, not the continuous loop or other suspension options 13' minimum. With suspension 14-16 would work well. The farther the distance between the two poles, the higher the anchor will have to be.
    Regards,
    Greg

    Maybe treated instead of cedar?

Yes - If "looks" aren't a pre-req than treated for sure. However, I need to be cognizant of ascetics. So, cedar is required.
