I would say you have a winner. Maybe I won't sell that HH SS UC afterall.

Hey Mac!
Do you think a symmetrical version will take a double layer gathered end hammock down to 50° as well?
Thank you very much! The SS UC with an IX UQ is a very lightweight system, and should work very well in summer rains!Originally Posted by Dutch
Yes! I've done it!
If you get cold with one layer, you can nest another one inside it.
Or, you could add that raw piece of IX I gave you!

So would you guys say this stuff is going to replace down uq's? AS it is lighter, compressible, and water is not an issue?
Can you estimate the weight of a winter version? maybe 10oz?
I doubt it. However, I used IX outside my down UQs this winter with excellent results.
My plan for next winter is to use two Speer Top Blankets, two IX UQs and two IX TQs. Each down Top Blanket will be sandwiched inside the IX nests.
It is not compressible from a stuff sack point of view, but it does pack pretty small. It is very light, and water resistant.
All depends. I can't wait to try nested IX UQs in cold weather. Three layers should weigh about 10 oz. I would expect it to be good to freezing, maybe below, if you can keep out the air leaks!

Let me know when I can order.
Which would be a more effective way to use IX with UQ's?
A) between the hammock and UQ
B) under the UQ, similar to a weather shield
You may order now, via PayPal to [email protected]. Thank you!Originally Posted by MedicineMan
I have had the best results with B, the IX on the outside. However, I also have used a layer of raw IX inside my PeaPod, with great results.
Next winter, I plan to buy another Speer Top Blanket. I want to try putting one Speer Top Blanket between the layers of a nested IX UQ, and another between the layers of a nested IX Top Quilt. Then the IX would be both the inner and outer layers of a down UQ and a down TQ.

Order placed.....I've skipped over most discussions of this insulative material now thinking hands on is the best approach to see what it is and what it can do....intended use will be paddle camping when I know water is an issue.
Two ordered. It will be interesting to see what it can do, both by itself ( say, replacing the SS OCF pad) and augmenting the SS pad and other quilts.
I wonder how many degrees protection one IX pad, by itself, provides? I'm sure that will vary a lot from person to person. Maybe a better way is just to determine if how much down thickness- or Climashield XP weight (ex:2.5 oz/sq yd) one layer of this IX stuff is equal to? I don't suppose this has been determined yet?
Regardless, it appears to be interesting material with some good possibilities for the weight, bulk and cost.
