Wow I’m impressed with how much snow there was and more in the forecast.
Did you park in the backcountry parking lot and end up over by the Wise shelter?
    Looks like a great time.
Oh and how were the roads?

Roads were great on the way there, backpackers lot was closed because it's gravel and they aren't scraping that lot, so we parked in the spots closest to it, and yes, hiked to Wise, planned to go up to Thomas Knob the next night, but left instead.

    We had a great time!
Learned a lot of things too, like no mater how nice your quilts are if you put an already very cold body into them, they will not heat you up. But boiling water will save you in a pinch!!!
We did not stay two nights, big storm was coming on Saturday that the rangers said would add another 5-8 inches, and on the north slopes the snow was already above me knees.
Cooked steaks and peppers over the fire at wise shelter, and had wonderful coffee by a fire in the morning. I'll add some pictures, next up, were going back to the gorge where we had our first backpacking trip almost 20 years ago.
Good choice getting out of there. Me and Fireman attempted to do Damascus to Fox Creek in mid-January. We ended up having to bail on day three at Whitetop because of the conditions. Tackling that climb was bad enough when we were still in the woods and the snow was about mid-calf. But once we got out in the open with the wind and snow drifts above the knees, I thought that last half mile was never going to end. It whooped both of us pretty badly. Thankfully, Mud Creek Ln had been scraped at some point so the snow went back to less than ankle deep and we high-tailed our butts back down to Whitetop Rd for a shuttle back to town.
