    Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical hammocks

    Fixin to buy a DreamHammock
One of choices was? Left lay or right lay, symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Hammock will have a zippered bug net, probably zippers on both sides. Or all sides

Is it better for me to get left lay?
I ordinarily sleep head right, feet left
Is left lay same as asymmetrical?

Would you choose symmetrical or asymmetrical and why.
Thanks for helping me understand meanings of these terms
I’ll be using this hammock for backpacking. Mostly short miles
    Thanks

Phantom, I can tell ya that when I switched to my symmetrical hammock, my world felt like it opened up!
I can get in any way I want. Lay any direction, flip and flop, and move around.
You can't go wrong that way!

    Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical hammocks

I am a left lay only. The asym typically refers to the bug net. I find that there is less fabric flopping around on my asyms, but have symmetrical setups as well. If you are a gram counter, you save a bit with asym.

I finally got a Chameleon, and with it a symmetrical bug net. I found that in my asym Half Zip and Eldorado, one left lay the other right lay, I would try to flop to the opposite side.

depends on the model you get with the zippers, the darien only has a zipper on one side and the raven, dangerbird and sparrow has zippers on both sides

if you only sleep head right, feet left then there is no reason to get a symmetrical, but if you like to change directions every now and then get the symmetrical. for me I can only get comfortable sleeping head left, feet right, so it would be pointless for me to a symmetrical hammock.

All the above. I'm left lay (head right) and only get in on the right so the Darien with zipper on the right is my go-to.

I also have a Chameleon with asym cover and net as a loaner for my friends/relatives who want to give it a test drive. Without the net/cover, first see if they like right or left lay, then install cover accordingly. VERY handy to be able to flip it. I see little reason to get a symmetrical net for a Chameleon unless you're a confirmed flip-flopper.

I have both the Raven (symmetrical) and Darien (asym) and sleep equally comfortably in both. I don't find that the cut of the bug net makes any real difference in comfort. The real benefit of an asym hammock is the weight savings from using less bug net material. Symmetrical is more versatile- especially if you go out with a new hammocker and you let them borrow it. But if always sleep in the same direction and don't plan on letting anyone else use your hammock, asym might make the most sense.

    Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical hammocks

I bought a DH Raven symmetrical a couple years ago. I sleep head left 95% of the time but every once in a while have a fitful night where having the ability to switch direction is nice. There's extra fabric on it compared to my BlackBird but I stretch out enough that it isn't in my face and doesn't really bother me. Unless the extra fabric and extra weight are concerns, I would go with symmetrical since it is a little more versatile.

When DH came out with the symmetrical Sparrow I sold a DH Raven and purchased one. Personally, I wouldn't purchase another asymmetrical GE. Every night I rotate through a variety of left/right and side lay options. I also have a symmetrical SLD Trail Lair that I rotate through the available options. The only asymmetrical GE in the stable is a WBBB XLC and I keep it around because it is a SL compared to the DL for the other two. The WBBB XLC fills a niche as the lightweight GE backpacking hammock, but I would rather take one of the Hammocktent 90*s.
