Be careful and do not shorten them to much. A couple years ago I shortened mine to get the apex triangles under my 12' RL tarp. As you shorten the dogbones the RR will start to feel "tippier" (less stable) the shorter you go. I found that for me a good balance between the length and the tippiness was 39" for the head end and foot end. Also the shorter you go with the dogbones the more the load increases on the cross bars. If you go really short the load on the crossbar could be enough to cause it to buckle (i.e. collapse due excessive column loading). Lastly I found that I got almost a inch of stretch in to dogbone once it was loaded up in use. So if you make your own make the about an inch shorter than you really want and after loading it will be pretty close.
