    Vendor For Shorter Dogbones

Was curious which vendor might be a good one to reach out to for getting some shorter loops made for the RR dogbones after reading though Acers old post. Reached out to warbonnet to see if they would be interested but they said the dogbones are a set length to hold tension properly.

If you have not tried it, brummel lock splicing is super easy so you could make your own.

If you know the exact length you want, contact Autumn Ultralight and I'll garondammtee she'll make ya some!

Can double over your bones to half the length in a pinch

Agree with just folding them over. If you carry a 6 footer, then you also inherently have a 3 footer and an 18 incher with you too.

If thats a no-go and you already have the dogbones, consider just picking out the splice and resplicing. its a 10 minute project.

I'd just add to be careful if you have the carbon fiber spreader bars.

I'm no math whiz (not by a longshot) but there is some formula involving the tangent with which you can calculate the increased compression load.

O, yea missed its for a bridge. As mentioned, do so carefully. A small change in the bones increases compression on the bar non-linearly.

Thanks for both the recommendation and the warning! My plan is to go for 37" which H. Hastings used on his AT thru hike with carbon fiber spreader bars and Acer tested in his post. And also to proceed with caution.

    Good deal.

Manufacturers are understandably conservative in their designs and you can 'push' things if you're well below the maximum weight limit. Sounds like you've done your homework.

Be careful and do not shorten them to much. A couple years ago I shortened mine to get the apex triangles under my 12' RL tarp. As you shorten the dogbones the RR will start to feel "tippier" (less stable) the shorter you go. I found that for me a good balance between the length and the tippiness was 39" for the head end and foot end. Also the shorter you go with the dogbones the more the load increases on the cross bars. If you go really short the load on the crossbar could be enough to cause it to buckle (i.e. collapse due excessive column loading). Lastly I found that I got almost a inch of stretch in to dogbone once it was loaded up in use. So if you make your own make the about an inch shorter than you really want and after loading it will be pretty close.
