    Testing the Tensa 4 Stand

I bought the Tensa 4 stand about two HangCons ago. I haven’t played with it since. A couple of months ago, I upgraded to the rounded feet, swapped to Amsteel, and got the metal stakes in conjunction with the orange stakes.

Tonight, I’m testing it in my back yard. It’s suppose to drop down to 32* tonight (north Tampa, FL).

I’m using the Dutch Chameleon, UGQ 12’ WD.

I used an orange screw on one side (due to soft sand, and a metal stake on the other.

I’ll do an AAR in the morning.

    Testing the Tensa 4 Stand

I survived the night... it got down to 31.7*

It was about 0100hrs when It started to collapse, but it didn’t fully collapse. More like half way. Tensa’s spliced amsteel (orange and black) started to slip and loosened under my weight in the middle of the night. The “Chinese finger trap” didn’t grip hard enough. Luckily, the thick tapered ends prevented it from slipping all the way out; hence, my setup did not completely fold on itself. Some of the ground stakes attached to my tarp pulled out, but easily restaked back into the ground.

I tied a slipknot to prevent it from slipping again... I haven’t had a problem since.

Besides that little hiccup, I love this setup. I plan on using this at the upcoming HangCon 2021.

ETA: one more pic... make that two.

That looks good to me. The Tensa4 can be a little bit fiddly sometimes, but I contrast that with the "fiddliness" of all the other things I have tried instead of the Tensa4, and the Tensa4 wins hand-down every time. I used to just use it on my motorcycle trips, but this past year with covid restrictions and all, I have found all kinds of uses for it. One of the best equipment investments I have ever made.

I love the camo pattern for your tarp. Is it MARPAT?

Yes, it’s MARPAT, and I freaking love it!

I was impressed with how well the tarp extensions held up the 12’ WD, and how the WD covered nearly everything. I will have to install the end poles next time to get a more comfortable and roomy feel. I bet it would really open it up.

Slippery half-hitch to secure UCR never a bad idea. Often slippage is a consequence of not fully milking the bury. The more popular, less costly, and slightly heavier/bulkier webbing option doesn't have this liability.

Trivia: a Scott in Florida splices most of our lines.

I’m not sure if the “finger trap” was not long enough or simply too loose. It wasn’t grabbing tight. I’m wondering if the other end simply didn’t have enough weight to make it taught enough to grab. I put the orange rope down to the stake and the black rope at the top. Was I supposed to do it the other way around?

Indeed... I have the webbing when I bought the kit, but I really like the amsteel more. For me, it’s easier to run rope than webbing. Tying the slippery half hitch worked very well and I don’t anticipate any other issue.

Overall, I love your Tensa4 stand. After it’s all put together, it’s solid. I also love the upgraded rounded feet, it made a big difference compared to the flat fleet. No more “edging.” I also love the tarp poles... I was impressed how well it work to hold up the 12’ WD. When I first looked at it, I was worried about the strength of it, and leakage of it rained. Seeing it upfront told me no rain was getting in, and my tarp wasn’t moving anywhere.

    I love the Tensa 4!

Nope that's best, and current User Guide finally documents that after too long letting it be something you were supposed to figure out yourself.

We used to price the newer rounded feet high because we had a tight supply, and didn't want to sell out. We now have a healthy amount so dropped the price by a lot, in case others wanting to retrofit were discouraged by the earlier high price.

If you already have the conversion kit but don’t want to borrow any parts from Tensa4, you want 1 each of tubing segments #1 - #4, plus 2 anchors and lines.
